Alte Sparkasse/Villa Kräuter

In 1912 the Sparkasse bank, founded in 1838 and known as the "Savings Temple", moved its administrative offices here. The architect Hertel from Badenweiler designed the eye-catching facade to give the original building a monumental portico in neo-classical style. The symbolic, antique-like facade is inspired by the ionic columns of ancient Greece. In 1979 Leonhard Eder created the sculptures "The Little Pagans", based on the legend of the Rosenburg Relationship.

Villa Kräuter (pronounced Kroyter) was built in 1897 by the Mannheim civil engineer Edwin Kräuter and his wife Marie Elise (nee Blankenhorn), but already before the Second World War the villa had passed into the ownership of the Sparkasse bank. The historical building with design elements of the late rennaisance is based on the work of the 16th century Venetian architect Andrea Palladio. Splendid Spanish Firs (Abies pinsapo) and a few Foxglove (also known as Empress or Princess) Trees (Paulownia tomentosa) on the south side together with the Copper Beech Trees on the Werderstraße street recall an extensive park with a network of winding paths that once existed here.

Next stop: about 220m down the road is the Protestant Parish Church.

Alamanicus is wandering his old Alemanni haunts, revisiting the places where once he used to drink, carouse, and beat up the odd Roman legionnaire or two. Things have moved on since his day, and the old Alemanni country now lies across south west Germany, French Alsace, and northern Switzerland. Cut through by the mighty Rhine, it is an area of great beauty, and a lot has happened there since Alamanicus last walked this land.
